The Story of Film: An Odyssey

I realized when I watched this film how little I actually knew about the history of film. There are so many movies about the history of society and people, but so few movies about the history of the art of film itself. In this "Odyssey", they go into great detail about the inventions that led to the development of film as a business and art: George Eastman inventing film on a role, The Lumiere brothers inventing the projector, and the date of the first public movie. They broke it up into time periods, starting with film as a side show, then technologies that transformed the movies into a business, and ending with how a single person can influence the development of modern culture: the movie star.

I really enjoyed this movie and learned a lot of really interesting information about the film business. I never noticed how much science actually went into making movies. All of the inventions that, at first, didn't seem like much. But over time, they transformed modern society. I would love to learn more about the history of film and I would recommend this film in the future.

"Between the Folds" Review

Between the Folds is in artful insight into the wonders of origami. This film demonstrates the intricate process of paper folding, and how it pairs both art and math seamlessly. They show many aspects of origami, from a man who makes paper for some of the most famous artist, to the engineers and mathmeticians who spend hours upon hours diagraming their works. Watching this film showed how origami isn't just a hobby for children, but a profession and even a way of life for some people.

I enjoyed the aristic direction on this short film, which I ironically noticed while observing the breath-taking paper sculptures. The director's use of silence when showing the origami was very appropiate, and it added to the awe of the art. The director juxstaposed an artist with an engineer, a student with a master, and the simple with the intricate.

This film opened my eyes to how much can be done with just a simple piece of paper. With no other materials, you can create anything you can imagine. I also never realized how much math was actually involved in the making of paper sculpture, along with their corresponding diagrams. Between the Folds is a intersting film that shows the many aspects of what I thought was a simple hobby.
